Marinas
In the Caribbean all ships are at anchor, not at a marina jetty like in Europe or the USA. Marina means storing the boat ashore. Prices of the marinas differ more than 100%. The rate calculation is often complicated and different from marina to marina. Our price comparison helps you to calculate your costs individually in different marinas.
For correctness and completeness of our computations we do NOT TAKE OVER ANY GUARANTEE. We however commentate the computations in detail, so you can follow subsequently and control our computations easily.

About 200 boats. Since 2000 in Port St. David in the south of Grenada, 30-40 minutes with the car from St. Georges.
Advantage:
Calm situation in beautiful natural tropical bay.
Family beach bar with good meal (2004/2005)
Clearing in and out possible.
Branch of the (nearly) duty-free boating discounter Iceland Water World inside the marina complex,
main shop in the lagoon of St. Georges.
Repairs of GRP, wood, metal (welding), rigging, sails, canvas.
Disadvantage:
Bad, pedantic connection to reach St. Georges, by bus with difficulty,
no infrastructure in the proximity,
all buying very laboriously, lasts many hours.

hardly drainage: Each strong rain sets the marina under water, the soil will become soft and
muddy, ships then often can not be moved for several days long, because the travel lift sinks
into the soft soil,
very few current/water connections (about 10 x current and 20 x water for 180 ships).
In order to be able to work on the ship, water hoses and electrical cables are pulled crosswise
over the marina area. As however there are much too few, water hoses and electrical cables
are dismounted again and again by marina workers or other skippers, if one is not on the ship.
Reasonable working is therefore possible only on few ships.
All vehicles, also the travel lift, must constantly drive over those water hoses and electrical
cables. Result: Water hoses are often defective and leaky: Result: Water runs there into the
soil, which becomes soft and muddy even without any rain. Result: Ships there hardly can be
moved, since the travel lift sinks into the soft soil.
Therefore all work of skippers and marina workers lasts infinitely long.
While Paeke Marina in Trinidad can move easily 20 ships per day, Grenada Marine creates often
only 4 ships per day, although the workers are very industrious.
Very high prices for repairs (up to 45 US $ per hour), local workers (2-5 US $ per hour) are
not allowed to work in the marina. Just for putting up the mast on a mid size monhull one charged
500 US $ in 2004 (mast putting down was already charged with a further bill). Rodney Bay Marina
e.g. requires together for putting the mast of any size up and down 125 US $ in 2005.

2002 before my return to GM I asked GM to clean the deck with their high pressure washer. With this item they clean the bottom of the boat within 20 minutes at the end of season while the boat is hauled. Instead of 20-30 minutes deck pressure washing they washed the deck by hand and charged for this work 18 (!!) hours (approximately 550 EC $). I complained, but I paid at the end and was sure, not to give any more orders to GM while not on board. 2003 GM washed the deck again before my return without any order and charged for this another 18 hours (approximately 650 EC $). This time I did not pay the labour, but I paid the hardware like soap etc. 2004 (6 weeks after Ivan) I announced myself and the day of my arrival by email 2 weeks before. When arrived in the marina, I wanted GM to bring the boat (was a little bit damaged by Ivan, but water tight, nothing severe) into the water within 1 or 2 days. GM refused. Reason: We have a plan, which ship we are shifting, and we will keep this plan. All other ships must wait, even if the owners announced themselves before or are already in Grenada. So we had to wait, had to spend 14 days in a hotel and had to pay a rental car, as we did not know the splash date. Of course, without any money replacement or even apology of GM. And more: GM charged me for the days while I was waiting for to be launched, as the GM organisation was not able to move my boat into the water. GM had communicated that also after hurricane Ivan security was ensured within the Marina. 3 security persons would guard the Marina 7 days 24 hours. After our return to Grenada we stated that nevertheless our outboard engine was stolen, although it was 3 meters up in the davits chained at the dinghy. 2 days later a wind generator was stolen from another ship, everything despite the security. Additionally: GM charged 1,500, - - US $ salvage costs, "required for alleged" hurricane Ivan, although our ship was taken from the hard into the travel lift without a minute of additional work. GM on demand: We had much damage by Ivan and we had many costs to bring additional equipment into the marina, in order to keep the business running there. 1.500, - - US $ is the minimum, which we require per ship, even if the ship did not need any additional expenditure of the marina. I did not pay, as no insurance company in the world would ever pay me back this money: Money paid for nothing substantial. |
120 boats ashore (dry dock) plus 230 slips up to 200 '. The marina belongs to the IGY group and was extensively modernized 2008 - 2010. Authorities, banks, shops, repair work shops, restaurants, supermarkets - everything very close. Good and inexpensive bus transport, to Castries 15 minutes.
Advantage:
Good organization, clean Marina, security 7/7 24 hours

So far (since 2005) only good experiences with RBM Boatyard. Since 2009 the organization became again better under the competent and helpful management of Edwin Chavez. One can assign RBM now to work on the ship during the summer while in nearly all Caribbean marinas one cannot do that. You will never know whether the work is done at the beginning of next season or not. Usually not. Therefore you will lose much time ashore after arriving. Against that, Edwin at RBM worries very reliably about everything. At any time I would Edwin assign work in the summer and will be sure: All work will be settled when next season begins. That is very rare in the Caribbean. The experienced, friendly and helpful travel lift crew (Ricky, Andy, Sherman) handles boats carefully putting carpets or soft plastic between hull and travel lift slings to avoid scratches in the hull. “Fiber” is doing fibreglass work very well. It always pays to ask RBM for current promotions. Actual offer: Boatyard travellift haul and launch for 1 hour 200.00 US$ to be used for bottom check (inclusive high pressure bottom washing = 250.00 US$). |

About 200 boats. Since 2003 in the Prickley Bay in the south of Grenada beside the Coast Guard, close to airport, to be reached well and easily in 10 minutes by car/bus from St. Georges.

Advantage: Maintained and well guarded Marina for 100-120 boats. Travellift 50 t + slip for broader ships. Good management (Frenchman). Dates are kept. The staff is friendly, very helpful and professional. There are good showers, toilets, air conditioners to be borrowed, washing machines, laundry dryers, Internet and telephone possible. Current and water are possible at all places. Very dry and hot climate. The boatyard area consists of red earth with solid underground and is dusty. Work is obtained when desired. One may work on the boat. Anchoring in front of the Marina is uncertain and very reduced. Consent air connections from and to Porlamar. (Airport by taxi approx. 30 minutes). Disadvantage: Far from Porlamar, "at the end of nowhere". Rental car or bus connection to Porlamar (approx. 1 hour) in the morning and at noon, back in the evening. Therefore much limited purchase possibilities: One should bring along food and ship accessories. |

Advantage: The locations ashore are well maintained (gravel soil/asphalted surface). Shuttle bus to the supermarket. Disadvantage: Electricity and water often need very long extensions. Distance between the ships is very close. It is so close that some work becomes difficult to be done. The centre of Willemstad is close. Nevertheless transport is bad. The Budget-Marine branch is small. No restaurants or bars in the proximity. One is a little bit apart from everything. No bar to have sundowners in the marina. There are few bathrooms and showers, but they are clean. No washing machines or dryers. The laundry is fetched when desired and supplied from an external laundry. This service is expensive. The Marina lies well protected. It has therefore little wind and becomes very hot. |

Advantage: West of Willemstad in the beautiful Piscaderabay, which is very well protected against all wind directions and swell. 25 - 30 places ashore. Each of them has own connections for water and current. Public bus and supermarket near by. Disadvantage: The bay lies in the lee of the large refinery areas. With little wind, the gases cause fogs in the whole area. The emissions of sulphur, oil and soot are enormous. All ships are unbelievably dirty after short time. Despite repeated and intensive cleaning the gelcoat is discoloured and corroded. The marina is not attached to public electricity mains, but operates a generator. That is very noisy 24 hours per day. Depending upon load varies the tension between 90 V and 135 V. That already ruined many electrical devices, which are not replaced by the Marina. The showers are a primitive interim solution in miserable condition. In May 2006 a washing machine was placed in front of the office. In December 2006 it did not function yet. Since the garbage is removed very rarely, rats come to the ships. The manager Charlton Liendo marks the marina as experienced with Perkins engines. He offered to me to overhaul personally my Perkins 4108M and the transmission. This "overhaul" was miserable in each regard. It led to a total loss at the engine.
