How do we test ?


Ships and equipment are expensive investments for many years. Therefore we do not think a fast test on a boat exhibition or a test run in the water is a good test, even if the tests are accomplished by experts. What can state an engine test over 3 months, if the average age of marine engines amounts to 15 years?

Only long term test over many years has force of expression, best from sail districts with hard conditions as in the Tropics, where everything is demanded from the products. Only which holds here, holds everywhere.

Products

-

we receive either from manufacturers for long-term test and let them - usually at our expense - install. Here we must make certain that it really concerns series products and not such ones, which were particularly carefully built and prepared for the test. So far such a thing however did not arise.

or we buy at our expense and have them installed at our expense.

or Skipper buy products for their ship, let them install at their expense and manage a log file about the enterprise. Then we are asked to supervise installation, enterprise and log file.

We usually report for many years from the installation on the further enterprise of the product. Only this helps during purchase decisions.

If technically feasible, we always try to test 2 identically constructed products at the same time. 2 identically constructed models because no manufacturer can exclude that with individual equipment an error in production may occur.

If one has

-

only 1 test equipment, the test could fail negatively, if by an error on individual equipment a conclusion on the entire product series is drawn.

-

2 identical test equipments on identical test conditions on the other hand, one cannot transform an error on equipment 1 on the entire series, if this error does not arise with equipment 2.

Therefore we prefer to use catamarans as test ships. There we can test 2 devices at the same time under identical conditions, 1 equipment per hull.

If a product is not any longer manufactured

this alone is no reason to break off tests or reports. Ships and equipment are also traded by second hand. In addition, even from not any longer manufactured products one can draw conclusions from the manufacturers old product behavior to the manufacturers new product behavior.

and if a new product comes as replacement on the market, with which we begin with a new test, we usually deactivate the report about the old product, in order not to produce misunderstandings between old and new product.


Sometimes long time well-known products appear under new name or under new company. That is particularly confusing and here we examine particularly exactly.

Improvements and degradations are here often to be found in details, e.g.:

is outwardly practically identically to its predecessors Air Marine 303 and Air Marine 403. In the technical structure it is however a completely new equipment with 20% higher achievement while very clearly less noise.

Katadyn watermaker 80E

-

Katadyn took over the PurWater "power survivor" watermaker line. The Katadyn watermaker 80E looks just as the PUR watermaker 80E from former times, but is substantially more carefully assembled under Katadyn than it was under PUR in former times. Therefore so far in the test all the lack did not arise any longer, which was usual in former times with the PUR equipments. In addition Katadyn watermaker 80E is substantially more quiet than the PUR watermaker 80E.
