Wind Generators 12 Volts


Since approx. 2002 we are observing and testing achievement and noise of different wind generators. We determined the following data (test Caribbean 2011):

Test Caribbean 2011

In order to get completely accurate results of measurement, one would have to accomplish tests in the wind tunnel. We do not have that. Therefore the Caribbean was selected for the tests, because the wind there blows usually during many hours the same way. An electronic windage scale was placed before each wind generator and the output was measured with one or at parallel tests (Air X and Air Breeze - with and without Spreco blades -) with 2 amp gauges.

We wanted to measure the noise with sound meters. However, that was nearly useless because of too many background and side noises. In addition, noise even at the same decibel level sometimes is felt to be disturbing, sometimes it is not. Therefore we report on our subjective impression, as far as it agreed with the opinions of other sailors.

In the morning at 06.00 o'clock most anchorages in the Caribbean are very calm. At that time the wind behind the islands is often weak with 6-10 knots. That is the ideal time to compare the volume of wind generators on little wind. Then one does not hear some generators at all. Others are noisy even in those calm conditions.

Wind from 25 to over 30 knots is the ideal time to compare the volume of wind generators with strong wind. Against the wind one hears few. But as soon as you see boats in front of you, the noise differences are to be heard very clearly. Some wind generator, which is loud with little wind (Superwind), becomes relatively quieter with strong winds. Some wind generator, which is quiet with little wind (Kiss), becomes relatively loud to very loud with strong wind.

The evaluation took place realtivly to competitors at the same wind force.

1=pleasantly quiet, 5=unpleasantly noisy.
